Naked's Project Approval Process
Why is there a “Project Review” process in order to partner with Naked?
We’re not like most agencies that take on every project that comes through the door. Our Approval Process exists for a few key reasons:
1) Ensuring Client Success – Building an app is a massive investment of time, money, and energy. We don’t want Founders sinking resources into something we wouldn’t build ourselves. Our best work happens when we’re passionate about the problem we’re solving, and we only take on projects where we believe in the vision and the Founder.
2) Capacity & Execution – Demand isn’t the issue (we’re ranked #1 in multiple categories), so we have limited capacity each quarter. Unlike other vendors and shops that offshore operations and scale up or down at a whim, we commit our core team to a set number of projects to ensure every client gets the quality, execution, and timeline we promise. Overpromising and underdelivering isn’t in our DNA.
3) Attracting Top Talent – Competing with Big Tech for California-based designers and developers is no small feat. The best talent wants to work on projects that matter—ones with real potential that won’t disappear after launch. Our Approval Process ensures we’re bringing in projects that excite our team and set them up for long-term success.
4) Long-Term Partnerships – We don’t just build apps; we build businesses. Our ideal clients aren’t one-and-done projects but long-term partners. By choosing Founders and ideas with strong Customer Lifetime Value (CLTV), we maximize the chances of ongoing Development, Marketing, and Support engagements—this is why our average client relationship spans ~3 years.
5) Maintaining a High Reputation – Great projects attract great reviews. We’ve built our reputation by working with Founders who are serious, driven, and working on ideas with real potential. That positive cycle fuels everything we do.
Why does Naked have capacity constraints?
Every project at Naked is shaped by our leadership team - starting on day one. Our Co-founder, Jason Martinez, who has designed and architected over $1B in software value throughout his career, personally leads every 4-hour Discovery Day session.
This level of involvement from leadership continues throughout the engagement and is a big reason why we take on a limited number of new clients each quarter. It’s not the most scalable model - but it’s intentional. We believe the best outcomes come from working closely with the right Founders, not from churning out volume.
To maintain this quality, we also carefully vet every designer, developer, and marketer to meet the high standards we set across all projects. Our focus is long-term partnerships and maximizing lifetime value - something our niche clientele values deeply.
Who is on Naked's Approval Board?
John Driscoll (CEO), Jason Martinez (Co-founder, Chief Design Officer), Robby Boyd (Executive Creative Director), Aaron Cash (CTO).
Our Approval Board also includes a rotating representative from equity stakeholders in our sister company, Seven Ventures.
What is Naked's approval criteria?
Our Approval Board evaluates each project based on key factors that determine its viability and potential for long-term success:
- Business Viability – Is there a clear and sustainable business opportunity
- Customer Desirability – Do people actually want this solution?
- Product Marketability – Can this product stand out and attract users
- Technological Feasibility – Can this be built efficiently and at a high quality?
- Investor Fundability – Will this concept be compelling for future investment?
- Founder-Market Fit – Is the Founder uniquely positioned to succeed with this?
The overarching questions we answer are:
1) Is the idea solving a clear problem - or is it a solution looking for a problem?
2) Did this idea recently become possible or necessary?
3) Is there a proven market? Are there any easily searchable competitors or proxies?
4) If an unproven market, can we find people online who have this problem and are searching for this solution?
5) Can we see several paths towards adoption and ultimately monetization?
6) Do we foresee technical and/or app store approval issues that would be high-risk roadblocks?
7) What is the Founder's motivation for creating an app startup?
8) How well does the Founder understand the problem they're solving, and the user their solving it for?
9) Does the Founder have expertise or market knowledge we can lean on when designing the MVP?
10) Does the Founder have entrepreneurial experience or has led other ventures in the past?
Ultimately, we’re looking for Founders and ideas that align with our expertise, philosophy, and success criteria.
Money-Back Guarantee
How does the 'Money-Back Guarantee' work?
You can request a full, 100% refund within 24 hours after Discovery Day. Plain and simple.
Our goal is to give you an incredible experience and full confidence that we’re the right team to execute your vision. If we don’t accomplish that, then we shouldn't continue our partnership.
What happens if I cancel after choosing the equity-backed payment option?
Requesting a refund means canceling the engagement means the equity agreement is also canceled—Naked will not invest $5K, and you will not grant us equity. Simple as that.
There are no hidden clauses or surprises here.
How do I request the refund?
Just email your Account Manager, and CC josh@nakeddev.com within 24 hours after your Discovery Day to let us know.
We will then provide you a receipt confirming the refund was initiated, and it takes 5-10 business days to fully process back to your funding source.
Can I have a few client references before signing?
We completely understand the desire for certainty before entering such an important partnership for your app journey. Just as you want to ensure the right fit, we also take great care in approving Founders and projects that align with our expertise and values.
However, we don't send requests for 1:1 client references out of respect for our Founders’ time and privacy. Given how busy they are building their startups, handling individual requests from every potential client would quickly become unsustainable.
That said, we have collected dozens of verified reviews from Founders just like you on Design Rush, GoodFirms , and Clutch.co - where clients have shared their experiences working with us. Additionally, we've personally interviewed several Naked Founders so that you can hear directly from them in Naked's Client Testimonial Video below!
Pitch-Investors Guarantee
How does the 'Pitch Investors Guarantee' work?
Our CEO, John Driscoll, regularly attends investor conferences and pitch events, and as a sponsor, he has the ability to invite Naked’s clients to join.
These events provide an opportunity to network with Angel and VC investors, but it's important to set the right expectations—while some events focus on formal pitch presentations, others are more casual networking opportunities designed to build relationships over time.
We highly encourage Founders to attend and start expanding their investor network early. The best funding opportunities often come from ongoing connections rather than one-off pitches.
There’s no limit to how many Naked-sponsored Investor Events you can attend!
How do I get to pitch at an event?
Stay active in our weekly Founder University Coaching sessions to stay in the loop on upcoming opportunities. If you're interested in pitching, let your Account Manager know. We'll provide prep guidance and assess your readiness. While pitch spots are limited, priority is always given to Design Accelerator clients who are actively engaged and investor-ready.
Even if you're not quite ready, you can still attend to network, learn, and build relationships with investors and other Founders. Every event offers value, even as an observer.
How can I pitch Seven Ventures?
Naked's sister company, Seven Ventures, invests in a small number of early-stage apps each year. While we can’t guarantee investment beyond the initial equity-backed payment we provide, all Design Accelerator clients are eligible for consideration. Selection is based on a few key factors:
-
John’s direct interest in your project
-
Feedback from our internal team
-
Your engagement in Founder University Coaching and course materials
-
Your responsiveness, execution, and overall coachability
If your project shows strong potential and you stay actively involved, you’ll be on the radar when investment opportunities arise.
How can I get ready to meet investors?
All new Design Accelerator clients get access to our online Founder University Courses and our Step-by-Step Fundraising Playbook.
If you are in a position where you need to raise funds for the next stage, we will ensure you complete each step of our Fundraising Playbook as you move through the Design phase, so you're making progress on both sides (product and fundraising).
We also highly recommend joining the weekly Founder University Coaching each week to get direct feedback from John and our community of other app Founders!
Founder University Coaching
How do I get invited to the weekly Founder University Coaching?
You will receive an invitation to these weekly Zoom coaching sessions with John Driscoll after you have completed your Discovery Day.
Be sure to ask your Account Manager if you miss the invite! We're excited for you to join our community and give you ongoing guidance on your app journey.
Who runs the Founder University Coaching?
These are conducted by John Driscoll, CEO of Naked and Markus Kalius who spearheads our sister company, Naked Ventures.
What should I expect in the weekly coaching sessions?
These 1 hour sessions are designed to be a collaborative space for Naked's Founders to seek guidance and answers for anything related to your app journey! Nothing is off limits (except specific legal advice, of course).
We recommend all clients to complete their online Founder University Courses in tandem with attending weekly Founder University Coaching.
Need pitch and Pitch Deck feedback? Fundraising advice? How to get market traction and grow your audience? How to stay motivated? You're in the right place!
This is also a space to continuously engage with Naked's Founder community, and we'd love for you to become a part of it.
How many coaching sessions are there?
To provide a space for our Founder community to connect and gain continuous support from John Driscoll, the weekly Founder University Coaching will be every Wednesday of every week (barring John's occasional travel restrictions).
Founder University Course
What is Founder University?
Launching an app company is a complex journey, and success starts with a solid foundation. That’s why CEO John Driscoll created Founder University—a comprehensive online course designed specifically for new app Founders.
With 40+ hours of exclusive content, this course covers everything from creating a compelling pitch deck and building an investor pipeline to gaining early traction and developing the mindset of a seasoned tech Founder. It’s not just about learning—it’s about ensuring that you, your team, and Naked Development are aligned strategically from the start.
We highly recommend starting Founder University before Discovery Day so that we’re all speaking the same language, thinking strategically, and making decisions from a shared understanding. This enhances our ability to collaborate effectively and ensures we’re maximizing every step of the process together.
While not required, completing Founder University prior to Discovery Day will significantly improve your experience and set the stage for a stronger, more effective partnership.
How do I get access to the Founder University course?
Within 2-3 business days of signing you will receive an email invite to join via john-driscoll@y.kajabimail.net - so keep an eye out!
How long will I have access?
Lifetime access, meaning you'll have access to all current and new content John Driscoll uploads to the platform. We also upload all Founder University Coaching sessions to this platform in case you miss any of the weekly sessions.
How do I get feedback on my Pitch Deck?
Join any of the weekly Founder University Coaching sessions, and let John know you'd like his feedback!
It’s incredibly valuable for other Founders to hear that feedback, and for you to hear John's feedback on other Founder's Pitch Decks as well. Becoming "Pitch Perfect" is one of the most underrated aspects of fundraising that most Founders (even seasoned ones) get wrong.
The Design Phase
Why is Naked's Design Program called an "Accelerator"?
We may be fast... but that is not why we call our program an Accelerator.
Accelerators are tech term used to describe organizations that provide consultancy, coaching, and support to growing startups by leveraging their experience of launching other successful startups. They help startups refine their strategy over time and avoid common pitfalls that lead to failure (regardless of how good the idea is).
This is the same philosophy we have when partnering with our Founders. We provide coaching, product strategy, GTM strategy, monetization strategy, investor strategy, and marketing strategy, all under one roof in order to give our cleints the best odds of success possible.
What is the Design phase of building an app?
Simply put, this is the exciting first step to building an app.
At Naked - it's a holistic process. This is where we focus your big vision, the problem you’re solving, your preferred aesthetics, your ideal user, and potential roadblocks. We then combine all of those factors into a lean, beautiful app design with frictionless usability - all perfectly tailored to your market - so you go to market with the highest odds of success.
Your Design screens and other assets are created in the industry-standard design platform called Figma - and will be shared with you at the end of the Design process.
These screens are what we use to create your Figma “prototype”.
Lastly, we'll provide you with an ~80 page app "blueprint" called a Development Scope Document - which is detailed documentation of the architecture of your app, the user stories, integrations needed, key technical assumptions, and the overall scope of your app.
Will I have a fully functioning app after this Design phase?
Not yet. The Design phase is the first of two phases before launching your app to the app stores.
Design gives you your blueprint to creating your app, so all of the screens, user flows, and overall User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX) of your platform.
Development is the next phase, where your app get fully built then submitted to both iOS and Android stores.
What is a Figma "Design Prototype"?
A clickable, interactive prototype built in an industry-standard design platform called Figma. It is composed of your design screens, that looks and feels like a real app—but is not yet a fully developed product.
Throughout the Design Accelerator, we create these screens in both mid and high-fidelity to ensure user flows are intuitive, navigable, and easy to use. The prototype allows for clickable interactions, including screen transitions, swiping, and pop-ups, so you can see a preview of the UX before entering Development.
Beyond testing, a Figma Design Prototype is also an invaluable asset for investor presentations, helping you showcase your vision and demonstrate the value your app provides to users.
Will my app be built for both iOS & Android?
Yes - Naked develops using a cross-platform compatible framework that means your app will be launched on both Android and iOS.
What is my level of engagement during the Design phase?
Here is a visual breakdown of the time requirement on your end throughout the Design process:
Does Naked own any part of my IP or my app?
Unless you’ve chosen the equity-backed payment option, Naked Development does not own any part of your app. You retain 100% ownership of your app, its intellectual property, and all user data.
If you opt for the equity-backed payment, our sister company, Seven Ventures, will invest $5,000 in exchange for 5% equity via a SAFE agreement, executed once your company is incorporated.
Do I have to go with Naked for Development?
No. You are by no means beholden to choose Naked as your long term developer partner after Design. With your Figma Prototype, wireframes, and Development Scope Documentation, at that point - any reputable developer will be able to build your app.
Even after Development, you can opt to go with any other Developer in the future as well.
You might be thinking... separating Design / Dev is a risk for Naked, right?
Yep. But we're okay with that.
We're confident clients will want to work with us even more after Design and Development (not less). Otherwise, we didn't earn it.
What comes after the Design phase?
After Design comes the Development phase. This is when our team turns your Design into a quality, fully functioning app that is launched to both the iOS and Android stores.
What else can Naked do for my app startup?
We have experts covering most of critical areas a growing startup needs.
Marketing / technical Support & maintenance / Product Demo Videos / Download Funnels / Commercials / Logos / Naming / Brand Books / development retainer (Incubation) / and more.
You name it - we likely have some of the best in the biz doing it, or can point you in the best direction.
Is designing a Logo included in the Design Accelerator?
A logo is not included in the Design Accelerator because we don’t believe in simply whipping something up!
A great logo should align with your brand identity, archetype, and resonate with your ideal customer profile (ICP)—which requires a thoughtful and strategic approach. Our branding process is an in-depth creative journey that typically takes 3-4 weeks on its own to ensure a lasting impact.
Also, please review the List of Final Deliverables page in your Proposal thoroughly so we're fully aligned as we move forward!
Can I pay in milestones for Design?
We require full payment upfront for the Design phase, as this ensures we can allocate the right resources and move efficiently through the process without delays.
That said, we do offer flexible payment options for Development, and we’ll explore those with you later on in Design after we’ve finalized the scope and have clear cost certainty.
How does payment & invoicing work?
We offer two payment options for the Design Accelerator:
1) Equity-Backed Payment: If your project is approved, our sister company, Seven Ventures, will invest $5,000 into your project.
This reduces the total cost of the Design Accelerator from $20,000 to $15,000 in exchange for 5% equity via a SAFE agreement (executed once your company is incorporated).
If we’re investing, it means we believe in your project’s potential and want to be part of your long-term journey.
2) Full Payment: Pay the full $20,000 cost upfront with no equity involved.
Invoice & Payment Details
- Invoices are due within 3 business days of signing.
- Payments are facilitated via ACH or Wire Transfer only. We no longer accept Credit Card as payment.
- Once your Proposal is signed, we will send you an ACH authorization form to make your full payment.
How does the 5% Equity-backed Payment Option work?
If your project is approved, our sister company, Seven Ventures, will invest $5,000 into your project.
This reduces the total cost of the Design Accelerator from $20,000 to $15,000 in exchange for 5% equity via a SAFE agreement (executed once your company is incorporated).
To sign a SAFE agreement, a Founder must incorporate their business first. So we allow Founders a grace period of 2 months to incorporate their business and sign the SAFE agreement.
What is a SAFE, and how does it work?
A SAFE (Simple Agreement for Future Equity) is a standard investment agreement created by Y Combinator, and it has become the most common way for pre-seed startups to raise early capital. Instead of issuing equity immediately, a SAFE grants the investor the right to receive equity in the future—usually when you raise your first official funding round.
It’s designed to be simple, Founder-friendly, and fast to execute. There’s no need to negotiate a current valuation or deal with complex legal structures. Equity only converts later when a triggering event (like a priced funding round) occurs, allowing you to stay focused on building your company.
We use the YC standard SAFE template for our agreements. If you’d like to learn more, here are some helpful resources:
- SAFE Agreement (YC Standard Template)
The Development Phase
How much will Development cost?
It’s impossible to determine the exact cost of an app upfront without thorough discovery, consultation, UX iteration, and research into third-party APIs and services.
That said, we understand ballpark estimates are important. The vast majority of our development projects range between $65k - $95k as we guide Founders toward impactful MVPs.
For apps with complex features, intricate databases, or dense API interactions (such as fintech or machine learning solutions), costs can be higher.
Once we align with your vision on Discovery Day, we’ll schedule a Development Expectations Meeting with our Co-Founders to ensure we’re building within a scope that aligns with your goals and budget.
Do I have to pay for Development in a single payment?
No, you don’t. We primarily work with new Founders and startups, so we understand that cash flow can be tight in the early stages.
Because we’re committed to the projects we approve, we’re comfortable spreading payments over up to 10 months to help make development more manageable.
In most cases, we can kick off development with ~$25K down, allowing us to focus on getting your product to market as quickly as possible—because speed to market directly impacts your odds of success.
What is the "Development Expectations" meeting?
This meeting will be scheduled with you, Jason Martinez, and John Driscoll within 3 weeks of Discovery Day.
The purpose of this meeting is to be proactive about the scope of Development, and give you a more accurate Development estimation once we have a deeper understanding of what we're building.
This also gives John an opportunity to consult on trimming down features during the Design process if needed to ensure we're creating an impactful, yet lean MVP.
Why is a “lean” MVP so important?
Many reasons. Building small to start is the cornerstone of software best practices for a reason:
- Lower costs
- User data is cleaner / easier to analyze
- Time to market is shorter
- Risk of false assumptions is lower
- Ability to pivot and iterate higher
- Lower friction UX
To boil the reasons down - it keeps overall risks lower and increases your odds of building a successful app company.
We encourage you to research your favorite apps and review their product roadmap from inception to what you see today - and check out the funding they needed to get to where they are now. You’ll see starting small, and building step by step is the playbook of successful app startups.
Make sure to watch John Driscoll’s video on this topic here as well!
What makes one app cost more than another?
An oversimplification is a) number of features b) number of user roles c) number of third party interactions and integrations d) how long it takes to build each feature e) how long it takes to build the backend database and architecture.
These questions can only be fully answered after the Discovery / Design phase.
How long does the Development phase usually take?
A conservative timeline expectation for development is 5-8 months, depending on scope. We will be able to provide you an exact estimated timeline after the Design phase.
Note that this includes testing phases, app store approvals, and launching your app to the app stores.
Note: the development timeframe is in addition to the Design timeframe (which is 4-5 weeks).
What if I want to add new features after launch?
Iteration based on user feedback is the name of the game, so this is normal. We can add to your app on a feature-by-feature basis after launch, or if you're scaling fast, we can assign a full time development team to your project.
Does Naked help with technical Support & Hosting after Development?
Can Naked help with Marketing my app?
Absolutely. Our business model is built on long-term partnerships with Founders who are serious about growing successful app companies. That means marketing isn’t an afterthought - it’s a critical piece of the puzzle.
With Naked, you’re working with a team that specializes in mobile app growth hacking and already understands your product, target audience, and the dream outcome you’re offering users. This ensures your Marketing Strategy and Download Funnel are set up for maximum traction from day one.
What are the ongoing maintenance costs after launch?
The cost of maintaining and supporting your app post-launch varies based on factors like data requirements, third-party integrations, and overall usage. While every app is different, a conservative expectation for ongoing monthly costs typically falls between $900 – $1,600.
We’ll discuss the specifics of your app’s needs as you get closer to Development so you have a clear understanding of what to expect.
Important App Terminology
What is a Figma "Design Prototype"?
A clickable, interactive prototype (composed of your Design screens) that looks and feels like an app. However, this is not a fully launched app.
These screens are created throughout the design process in both mid and high-fidelity to test that the user flows created are navigable and that the app is easy to use.
While there is no code behind these yet, buttons can appear to be clickable, pages can be swiped through, and pop-ups can appear. Clickable prototypes are invaluable to testing UX before committing to full development. They are also great for presenting to investors to get funding, as it shows the full vision and the value it will provide to users.
Figma Prototype files Naked provides you can be viewed on either your desktop or mobile device. If your app idea requires a web version and a mobile version, you will receive a Figma Prototypes for both versions.
What is a "high-fidelity, graphically designed" screen?
It’s a screen that looks like the fully polished, finished product (aka any of the screens you’re used to seeing on your favorite app.
We will build 5 of these high-fidelity screens during our Design program. However, we also build all of your UI/UX using mid-fidelity screens for wireframes (typically 40+).
What is a "mid-fidelity" screen?
It’s a screen that has all the elements of a fully functional screen but does not have the final graphics/animations/colors/images on top of it yet.
It’s a cost-effective way for you to get through Design and wireframe all of your user journeys, user stories, UI/UX for a Figma Prototype as well as effectively scope Development.
Once you go into Development, we will turn all of your mid-fidelity screens into finalized high-fidelity screens.
What is an "MVP"?
Minimum Viable Product. There is room for interpretation on what "minimum" and "viable" mean, depending on the agency you ask.
At Naked, this means a truly "stripped down" version to minimize false assumptions and allow space for the market to dictate the direction of the product (so you ultimately create something people love).
What are "wireframes"?
A visual guide for the layout of all of the screens on an app or website, in addition to the structure of all the elements on each individual screen.
Think of all of your app screens laid out on a desk in front of you. How do they interact? What is the user's journey between each feature? What should they see, and what's the easiest, most frictionless way for the user to navigate your app?
These are the questions that wireframing answers, by drawing the connections between your screens.
It allows you to see all of your UI/UX laid out right in front of you, easy to visualize, and ready for Development.
What is UI vs UX?
UI: “Look and feel” of the app aesthetically (we want it to scream high quality)
UX: how the user experiences navigating the app (we want illicit feelings like enjoyable, easy, intuitive, intelligent, etc)
